How the Eye Works

Understanding Your Eyes

Your eyes are a window into the world. They detect and focus light to create images and allow us to enjoy the beauty around us, which is also what makes them so interesting!

At Weston Optical, we want to help you understand how all the different parts of your eyes work together to help you see. When getting new frames or contact lenses, we want our patients to be educated and informed about their vision.

Visit us to explore our selection of glasses and contact lenses and learn more about your eyes.

How Your Eyes Work

Knowing how your eyes work is important so you can be better informed about your health.

  • First, light passes through the cornea, which bends light and helps the eye focus. The light also passes through the pupil, and the iris controls how much light the pupil allows in.
  • Then, this light passes through the lens, which works together with the cornea to focus light correctly on the retina.
  • When light hits the retina, special cells known as photoreceptors transform the light into electrical signals.
  • These electrical signals travel from the retina through the optic nerve to the brain, turning the signals into the images you see.

This process helps you see at different distances and allows you to focus on near and far objects. It can seem complex, so if you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at Weston Optical.
