The Right Time for Contact Lenses

The burning question is always, when is the right time for contact lenses? There isn’t a definitive answer to that question, and it depends on where you are in your vision care journey.

If you’re able to wear contact lenses, it’s crucial to learn about the responsibilities of proper lens care. Vision development includes practicing healthy vision care habits to preserve your vision.

Proper vision care starts at a young age through consistent eye exams. Children can learn to use contact lenses, but it’s essential to ensure they’re up to speed on proper eye care and contact lens maintenance.

Types of Contact Lenses

The many advancements in lens materials and technology over the years have allowed for more options than ever. At Weston Optical, we offer a variety of options for your prescription correction, tear production, lifestyle, and more.

Soft Contact Lenses

Soft contact lenses are the most common type of contact and are made of soft, flexible plastics that allow oxygen to pass through to the cornea. Most people find soft contact lenses comfortable, and they are easier to adjust to than rigid gas permeable lenses

Newer soft lens materials use silicone-hydrogels to provide even more oxygen to your eyes.

Rigid gas permeable contact lenses are durable and resistant to deposit buildup. These hard contact lenses are pliable and comfortable, allowing more oxygen to pass through to the cornea than soft contacts.

RGP lenses are also more durable, easier to handle, and less likely to tear. RGP lenses may require a longer adjustment period and can take a few weeks to get used to compared to soft contacts.

Disposable contact lenses are soft lenses that are discarded on a daily, weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis.

The disposable nature of these contact lenses prevents protein deposits from building up and affecting your vision. Disposable contact lenses eliminate the need for frequent cleaning and maintenance and are available in most prescriptions.

Extended wear contacts come in gas-permeable or soft lens varieties. They are designed for up to 30 days of continuous usage. While these lenses can be worn overnight, sleeping in them poses a higher risk of infection.

Extended wear lenses require more frequent check-ups to ensure your eye health isn’t being compromised.

Toric contact lenses are available in both soft and gas-permeable designs and feature varying powers to correct astigmatism. Due to these different powers, these lenses can be harder to fit and may require additional time to adjust to.

At Weston Optical, we provide 1-on-1 fittings for all your vision care needs.

Bifocal contact lenses feature more than one power. These different powers allow you to have clear vision both near and far. Bifocal lenses are available in both soft and RGP designs and can be used to correct age-related presbyopia, astigmatism, myopia, and hyperopia.

Like toric contact lenses, bifocal lenses may require a more comprehensive fitting process.

Tinted or cosmetic customized lenses allow patients to change the color of their iris. These lenses are available in all sorts of colors and patterns but are not available for all prescriptions, but Air Optix Colors and Acuvue Define lenses can be worn daily!
